What is a thyroid nodule?
Thyroid gland is located in front of the neck. A round to oval swelling or lump in the thyroid gland is called a thyroid nodule.
How do you know if you have a thyroid nodule?
Generally you might see/feel a swelling in your neck or someone in the family may point towards a swelling located in your neck. Sometimes it may be incidentally picked up by imaging done for other non-related reasons. Goitres are large thyroid swellings with multiple such nodules
Is there something I should be worried about ?
No. Most of the thyroid nodules are benign (non-cancerous). However about 2-5% of these may be cancerous. But the good news is most of the thyroid cancers if detected at the right time are completely treatable. Ignoring the nodule and delaying treatment are the only reasons to worry.
What are the symptoms?
- Heaviness in the neck.
The swelling may or may not be painful.
Large nodules/Goiters can cause difficulty in swallowing /breathing
Sometimes the nodule may produce excess thyroid hormone due to which there may be symptoms like- anxiety, increased sweating, diarrohea, weight loss, fatigue, increased heart rate.
Will I need tests?
- Tests are necessary. Whether a nodule is benign or cancerous can be determined only by certain investigations advised by your Endocrine surgeon (Dr.Sapana Bothra Jain). No nodule , no symptom should be left unaddressed.
Do all Thyroid nodules need surgery?
- No. Depending up on the size and type of nodule(as per the test reports) Dr.Sapana Bothra Jain will decide whether to operate or follow up the nodule with regular tets.
